INTERNSHIPS

The Channel Islands Maritime Museum offers enriching unpaid internship opportunities for high school, college students, graduate students and emerging professionals who are curious about careers in museums, the arts, education and more! Internships are designed to provide hands-on experience while offering insight into how individual departments contribute to the Museum as a whole.

Internships are available by semester, during the summer or for a full year, with flexible scheduling to accommodate school and work commitments. Academic credit may be arranged. To inquire about an internship, please email your resume and cover letter to shnat@cimmvc.org. Be sure to include your interests, academic or professional goals and if there is a specific department (listed below) that you're interested in.

Marketing & Communications Internship

CIMM seeks a creative, energetic Marketing and Communications intern who is passionate about the arts and eager to gain real world experience working in public relations at a cultural institution.

The Marketing and Communications Intern will assist with all aspects of promoting the Museum, including audience development, media research, campaign design, social media marketing, digital advertising, event planning, media tracking, data reporting and analysis, and some administrative tasks. The ideal candidate is creative, energetic, detail- oriented, passionate about the arts, and eager to gain real world experience. Responsibilities will include research and other tasks, and the opportunity to complete one to three special projects designed to enhance a professional portfolio.

Registrar & Collections Internship

The Collections Manager creates and maintains the official records for all of the objects in the CIMM collection or on loan to the museum.  The internship program is designed to provide students with the opportunity to learn about projects related to documenting the permanent collection, inventorying and cataloguing objects, incoming and outgoing loans, exhibitions, database management, and special projects. Interns will be exposed to all phases of registration and receive additional assignments focusing on archiving and museum ethics. This internship is appropriate for undergraduate, graduate, or post-graduate students from the following majors: museum studies, art history, art, anthropology, archaeology, history, and maritime history.

Education Program Internship

This internship will focus on museum education in an art, STEAM and maritime related topics. The intern will be working primarily with the Museum’s educators on a variety of projects related to the Museum’s education programs. The intern will experience all aspects of museum education including: teaching from the object, working with a variety of age groups, developing and conducting classes at the Museum. Specific duties include: preparing materials for classes; interacting with visitors and groups through educational and instructional activities and tours; and developing curriculum and educational programs for various exhibitions. Experience in the following areas is preferred: museum education experience; experience supervising children; good written communication skills; knowledge of educational theory and practice; computer skills, word-processing; and basic office skills.

The Museum is located in the beautiful Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard, CA. All Museum staff members collaborate and work as a team to protect, conserve and interpret the art collection and to ensure that every Museum guest has a memorable, informative, and enjoyable experience. The Museum seeks applicants who have an interest in the maritime arts or the museum field and are ready to join a dynamic team.
