Charting New Courses: CIMM Launches it's Maritime Pathways Academy

Students & staff aboard the Estella, Fish with the Finest Vessel

The Channel Islands Maritime Museum is proud to announce the launch of its new Maritime Pathways Academy, an innovative educational initiative designed to connect Ventura County students with the region’s rich maritime heritage, ocean stewardship and the wide range of exciting career opportunities available within the local maritime industry and beyond.

Students learn directly from Harbor Patrol & See the fire boat in action

Developed for students in grades 6–12, the Maritime Pathways Academy is a full-day field trip experience that blends maritime history, STEAM education, environmental awareness, and hands-on career exploration. Through immersive activities inside the museum, aboard a commercial vessel and with the CSUCI Boating Center, students gain firsthand exposure to the industries, technologies and careers that shape Ventura County’s vibrant working coastline.

Ventura County is home to major maritime assets including the Port of Hueneme, Ventura Harbor, and Channel Islands Harbor, as well as the extraordinary ecosystems surrounding the Channel Islands. Yet despite living alongside these important maritime resources, many students remain unaware of the diverse and high-paying careers available in the maritime sector.

The Maritime Pathways Academy was created to help bridge that gap.

“The maritime sector offers incredible opportunities right here in our own backyard,” said Doug Riffenburgh, CIMM Executive Director. “Through this program, we want students to see themselves as future marine biologists, engineers, environmental scientists, vessel operators, artists, historians, and maritime professionals. We’re helping young people understand that the ocean is not only something to appreciate and steward, but also a powerful economic engine and a gateway to rewarding careers.”

Students learn about maritime navigation

The program leverages the museum’s renowned maritime art and cultural collection to introduce students to Ventura County’s maritime history, the importance of global trade, and the role our local harbors and ports play in everyday life. Students also participate in interactive STEAM-based learning activities and experience a harbor tour aboard a commercial vessel, where they gain early exposure to real-world maritime operations and careers.

The Academy is supported by a powerful coalition of community and industry partners, including the Port of Hueneme, CSUCI Boating Center and Fish with the Finest.

In April and May, the museum successfully piloted the Maritime Pathways Academy with local students, receiving enthusiastic feedback from both participants and educators. Building on that success, the museum is expanding the program and partnering with schools throughout Ventura County beginning this summer.

In addition to introducing students to maritime careers, the Academy aims to foster deeper ocean literacy, environmental stewardship, and a lifelong connection to the sea.
