INTERNSHIPS
The Channel Islands Maritime Museum offers enriching internship opportunities undergraduates, graduate students, as well as emerging professionals who are curious about careers in museums, the arts, education and more!
Internships are designed to provide hands-on experience while offering insight into how individual departments contribute to the Museum as a whole.​ Internships are available by semester, during the summer, or for a full year, with flexible scheduling to accommodate school and work commitments. Education Intern​
​
Bring maritime history, ocean science and museum collections to life while working with students in grades 3-12 through the Maritime Pathways Academy and our other programs. This internship provides hands-on experience in teaching, youth programming, museum education and curriculum development while working alongside museum staff and fellow interns. As an Educational Intern, you may have the opportunity to:​​

Teach and assist with hands-on activities focused on maritime history, navigation, ocean ecology, and maritime careers

Lead small-group discussions and interactive learning activities for students

Assist with curriculum development and refinement for educational programs

Share information about museum exhibits, collections, and local maritime history

Help develop and improve online and in-person docent training materials

Assist with museum activities, program setup, cleanup and organization

Work alongside museum staff and fellow interns as part of an educational team

Participate in training, professional development, and mentorship opportunities

Help document program activities through photos, reflections, and student feedback

Serve as a positive role model and mentor for participating students

Build experience in education, museums, public history, marine science, and youth programming​
Marketing and Design Intern​​​
​
​Gain hands-on experience in marketing, communications and design at a cultural institution. This internship offers the opportunity to help promote the Museum, connect with new audiences and support events and programs while working alongside museum staff. As a Design or Marketing Intern, you may have the opportunity to:

Assist with social media content, digital marketing and promotional campaigns

Help create graphics and other visual materials for Museum programs, events and exhibitions

Research audiences, media outlets, community partners and marketing opportunities

Support event promotion, outreach and audience development

Assist with digital advertising and media tracking

Help collect and organize marketing data and prepare basic reports

Research trends and creative ideas to help expand the Museum's reach and engagement

Complete one to three special projects based on your interests, skills and the Museum's needs

Curatorial Intern​
​
Explore maritime history through hands-on museum experience while working alongside professional curators on exhibitions, historical research and collections. This internship provides the opportunity to gain practical experience in museum work while contributing to the preservation and interpretation of maritime heritage. As a Curatorial Intern, you may have the opportunity to:

Conduct historical research using the museum's private library to support exhibitions, collections, and interpretive projects

Assist with the planning, development, installation, and deinstallation of exhibitions

Help catalog and document maritime artifacts and archival materials

Participate in curatorial meetings and gain insight into exhibition planning, collections management, and museum decision making

Collaborate with museum staff on research projects, grant proposals, and initiatives that support the museum's mission

Work alongside experienced museum professionals while receiving mentorship and exposure to careers in museums, public history, archives, and cultural institutions
Whether you're exploring a career in museums or preparing for graduate study, this internship offers meaningful experiences, professional mentorship and the opportunity to contribute to projects that preserve, interpret and share the rich stories of our maritime past. This internship is appropriate for undergraduate, graduate or post-graduate students from the following majors: museum & gallery studies, art history, studio art, history, and maritime history.​​

Registrar & Collections Intern​
​
Explore the behind-the-scenes work of caring for and managing a museum collection while gaining hands-on experience with maritime artifacts and historical materials. This internship offers an opportunity to learn how museums document, organize, track and care for objects in their collections and on loan. As a Registrar & Collections Intern, you may have the opportunity to:

Document and maintain records for objects in the Museum's permanent collection

Inventory, catalog and organize maritime artifacts and collection materials

Assist with the processing and tracking of incoming and outgoing loans

Support exhibition preparation and the movement and documentation of objects

Learn and assist with museum database management and collections records

Work on special collections and registration projects based on Museum needs

Gain experience with archiving and the organization of historical records

Learn about museum registration practices, collections care, and professional ethics

The Museum is located in the beautiful Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard, CA. All Museum staff members collaborate and work as a team to protect, conserve and interpret the art collection and to ensure that every Museum guest has a memorable, informative, and enjoyable experience. The Museum seeks applicants who have an interest in the maritime arts or the museum field and are ready to join a dynamic team.
