About the event

Join us for a special Speaker Series event with Alan Salazar, tribal elder, storyteller, educator and founding member of the Chumash Maritime Association, for an inspiring talk titled The Revitalization of Chumash Canoe Culture. Drawing from decades of experience building and paddling traditional Chumash plank canoes, known as tomols, Alan will share the rich maritime heritage of the Chumash people and the ongoing efforts to preserve and revitalize these sacred traditions for future generations. Through stories, history and personal insight, this engaging presentation offers a powerful connection to California’s Indigenous maritime past and living culture.
