Join us for an upcoming new volunteer orientation on August 16 and 20th. See details at bottom of page.

CIMM is proud of its tradition as a predominantly volunteer-run organization. Docents and volunteers have helped to staff the museum and its events for the last 31 years and are truly the heart of the Museum.

The Museum is always looking for friendly and eager volunteers. There are so many areas available to help support the Museum and its community of visitors.

Museum Tour Docent

Docents are available to guide our guests through the Museum, describing the world-class art and ship models in our collection; providing a general introduction to the Museum’s mission, history and collection; and interpreting current exhibitions for visitors of all ages. (Please Note: To be a Tour Docent you must complete the 8-week Docent Training program. Learn about the Museum’s collection, prepare to give tours to the public, work the Museum front desk, help with events. There are two Docent Training classes per year. The Museum also offers an online training course/program. The next tour docent volunteer course begins on September 12).

Docents interact with small groups of students to introduce them to various aspects of Maritime life through our art and ship model collections

Docents assist in a variety of ways at Museum exhibition opening receptions and exhibition-related programs. CIMM hosts several events throughout the course of the year including the CIMM Speaker Series, Art Comes Alive, and Chowderfest. Duties include event setup and takedown and guest/visitor management before/during/after an event. Training on the museum POS system is provided as it is a component of this position.

Visitor Services

Volunteers greet every guest coming into the Museum and are responsible for initiating an enjoyable visit, taking in entrance fees, signing up memberships, and supporting the sales of the Museum store. Hands-on training is provided.
